If your subscription process looks like a junk drawer (a form here, a plug-in there, a weekly CSV to "fix it"), you're losing money somewhere. Probably in several places.
Joined up beats jerry-rigged. Every time.
The truth publishers already know (but hate to admit)
- Acquisition is "pretty good" until the paywall hands off to a clunky checkout.
- Billing "works" until cards expire and Direct Debits bounce.
- Fulfilment "mostly ships", unless a holiday stop or a replacement copy gets missed.
- Renewals "go out" and then vanish into the inbox void.
- Reporting is "fine" after someone spends Friday reconciling spreadsheets.
None of these is a disaster on its own. Together they add up to a business that works harder than it needs to and still can't quite say how many subscribers it has.
End to end means no gaps to fall through
- Acquire: offers and prices you can change without phoning a developer.
- Onboard: clean data in, duplicates out, consent captured, addresses checked.
- Bill: cards, Direct Debit and invoices, with a sales ledger that knows who has actually paid.
- Fulfil: digital access straight away, print files on schedule, stops and replacement copies tracked.
- Serve: one history for customer service. No more "which system is this in?"
- Renew: the right message, through the right channel, at the right time. We've written more about building a renewal series that works.
- Report: one customer record, one source of truth. Finance can breathe again.
In Avio, that's the single customer view sitting over orders and subscriptions, fulfilment, renewals and finance. In Adeptis, our platform for smaller publishers, it's the CRM joined to subscriptions and renewals and circulation. Same idea, different scale. If you're not sure which fits, Avio or Adeptis sets out the difference.
Why do this now?
- Stop the leaks: fewer drop-offs at checkout, fewer failed payments, fewer people who simply forgot to renew.
- Grow lifetime value: smooth upgrades and add-ons beat one-and-done offers.
- Make the ops smaller: no more re-keying, no more weekly CSV ping-pong between departments.
- Be ready for scrutiny: UK GDPR consent, retention and audit trails built into the flow rather than bolted on afterwards.
What tends to follow
I'm not going to quote you a percentage, because it depends entirely on where you start. But the direction is consistent. A checkout that doesn't fight the buyer converts better. Payment problems caught early mean fewer subscribers lost by accident. And when spreadsheets stop running the show, people get hours back every week.
Start where the pain is loudest
You don't need a big-bang rebuild. Map the process end to end, find the biggest leak and fix that first. Renewals, Direct Debit, print fulfilment, month-end: whatever is shouting loudest.
